Jo Linsdell explains why she created the Promo Day event

Jo Linsdell explains why she created the Promo Day event, www.PromoDay.info
The first Promo Day event took place on my website www.JoLinsdell.com back in 2007. It was just a chatroom embedded onto a page of my website. Very different from what the event is today, but it was based on the same idea right from its simple start.

There were several online conferences for writers with presentations about how to write, edit, and revise. Although some of them offered opportunities to network with other attendees none of them really addressed what to do AFTER you've written something. I saw a niche that needed to be filled and so Promo Day was born.

The idea for Promo Day was to give writers, authors, and other people connected with the publishing industry an event where they could come together to promote their work/services, network with each other, and learn about marketing, and author branding. And that's still what Promo Day is for. Promoting, networking, and learning.

I wanted to make it available to everyone and so I decided to make it a completely online event and free to attend.

It was a huge success right from word go and has continued to grow each year. With so much demand it was time to give the event a home of its own and so I got the www.PromoDay.info domain and introduced more features.

The event now takes place in forums, allowing for registered users to personalize their profiles and even upload images and files, and private message other attendees. Attendees can read threads from earlier in the day so they don't miss out on great conversations and tips. The webinars are now all in video format and viewable directly from the forums. As well as the numerous social activities going on in the forums during the event, there is now also added opportunities via social media channels so that attendees can put into practice straight away some of the tips and strategies mentioned in the webinars.

Last year I introduced pitch sessions with Publishers during the event and it turned out to be a big success. Several authors signed with Publishers following the pitch sessions they took part in at Promo Day.

Both the website and the forums are now mobile friendly meaning that attendees can also join in the fun from their smartphone or tablet. No need to even be at your computer!

I love how the event has developed over the years and plan to keep on improving it into the future. The feedback from past attendees has been awesome, and the support from sponsors has meant that I've managed to keep it a free event.

Hopefully Promo Day will continue to grow and develop for many years to come, and offer more and more opportunities to promote, network, and learn.

I look forward to connecting with you all more during the PD15 event on Saturday 30th May and welcome suggestions for how I can make the Promo Day event even better.

There will be Live Twitterchats, Facebook wall chats, Google+ hangouts, and more happening throughout the day on Saturday 30th May. Loads of opportunities to jump in and promote your books and services, and join in discussions about topics e.g. book marketing, the publishing industry, etc...

Welcome to Promo Day!

The big day is finally here and the action is already underway in the forums.

It's still not too late to register! Click the REGISTER NOW button in the navigation bar above and sign up now for access to the forums where the event takes place.

Here's a few tips for getting the most out of today's event:

Post to the forums.

There are loads of opportunities to promote, network, and learn in today's event.

Presentations

Comment on the presentations, leave feedback, and post questions. The presenters will be happy to answer them for you and it gives a chance for others to learn an extra tip or two at the same time. Also feel free to share your own tips and experience related to the topic.

All the PD14 presenters have given their time and expertise free of charge and so I'm sure would appreciate a note of thanks too ;)

Pitch sessions

Read each publishers submission guidelines and pitch them your idea. You just private message them your pitch via the forums and they will get back to you by the end of the day with their answer.

Promote and network

The forums are packed full of ways you can promote and network with other attendees. Don't be shy. Blatant promo is allowed at Promo Day so feel free to share your book links and tell us about them.

If you offer services like cover design, illustrating, book formatting, editing, etc... there's spaces for you to promote those too.

Doing a free download promo or countdown deal this weekend? There's spaces to promote those too and all books listed there will be shared via the Promo day social media channels too giving you some extra visibility for your promo.

Get Social

Throughout the day there are numerous extra events via social media that you can take part in e.g. Twitterchats, G+ hangouts, Facebook Wall chats, and Pinning parties.

You can find out when these are taking place by checking out the "Opportunities during Promo Day" thread in the forums.

Whilst some of these events are organised by Promo Day you are welcome to schedule your own too. Just make sure you post the info in the thread so people know when and where to take part and add the hashtag #PD14 when you post your event. e.g. add it to all tweets during your Twitterchat or include it in your status update when doing a Facebook Wall chat.

See you in the forums!

Show off your writing talents

Get your writing samples ready! There will be a special section on the forums during this years PROMO DAY where you can post a sample of your writing. As the event will be attended by publishers, editors and representatives from content websites, this is your chance to show off your talents and hopefully find some new writing assignments. It could also mean more sales for your books, as the sample could be a sneak peak from your latest release. It's up to you.

As with all material posted to the site, all genres are welcome but should bear in mind that the event is open to everyone and therefore out of respect, please keep them 'clean'.

The length, again, is up to you. I suggest not making the sample too long however as you will need to post it to the forum and with everything going on during the day people may not have hours to concentrate on your sample alone.

As the idea is to create interest in your work please remember to post a byline or weblink so people can contact you.
Samples can only be posted during the event on Saturday 15th May. Any posts to the forums prior to the event will be deleted.

By preparing your sample in advance you can make sure you put your best foot, or in this case words, forward.

The return of PROMO DAY

As announced back in August 2009, PROMO DAY 2010 will take place on Saturday 15th May. To be kept up to date with all information regarding the event you can subscribe to this blog or sign up for the mailing list at the PROMO DAY website http://jolinsdell.tripod.com/promoday

2010 will see a few changes to the event to allow more interaction on an international level. One of these is the introduction of forums in place of the PROMO DAY chatroom. Everyone will be able to post to the forums throughout the day, meaning that people can pop in and out and still keep up with the various conversations and opportunities presented during the event. There will also be special sections for publishers, editors etc...More information about this to follow.

The workshops will remain as LIVE chats and be held in the chatroom on site as in previous events.

As always PROMO DAY will be FREE to attend and open to all.

If you are interested in sponsoring this years event please email promoday@ymail.com for more details. The cost is minimal. Exposure big. A sponsor may be an individual author/writer (as in last years event- Linda Ballou) or a company.

All 'crew' members (sponsors, workshop hosts, moderators) get their book in the onsite bookstore free of charge. If you would like to have your book placed in the bookstore but do not take part in the 'crew' this year, you can for a small charge. Please email for more details.
